Physical Education
Welcome to our PE curriculum page! Miss Wordsworth is our PE leader alongside Mrs Speight and Mr Rowley. They have prepared an Intent Statement which is published below:
Intent
At St Theresa’s, our PE curriculum is central to our school identity and reflects our commitment to developing the whole child—physically, mentally and emotionally. Through high-quality physical education, we aim to help every child understand their body, build resilience and develop the confidence to lead active, healthy lifestyles in today’s world.
We are proud of our strong sporting culture, rooted in our Team Theresa’s ethos, where teamwork, determination and a sense of belonging are celebrated. Team Theresa's was born out of the London Olympics in 2012 and the legacy that this brought to our school has been immense; there is a clear correlation between our academic success and our sporting success proving (if one needed to) that a healthy body equals a healthy mind. We provide all pupils with regular opportunities to take part in high-quality PE lessons, daily physical activity and a wide range of extra-curricular sports, ensuring that every child can participate, succeed and enjoy being active.
Our curriculum promotes not only physical competence, but also important life skills such as cooperation, leadership, respect and perseverance. We aim to inspire a lifelong love of sport and physical activity, while continuing our tradition of success in competitive sport at local and wider levels. Through this, we prepare our pupils to thrive both in school and beyond, understanding the importance of physical and mental wellbeing in an ever-changing world.
Implementation
At St Theresa’s, our PE curriculum is delivered using the Complete PE scheme of work, ensuring a clear and progressive sequence of skills across all year groups. Lessons are carefully structured to develop pupils’ physical competence, confidence and understanding through a wide range of sports and activities, including games, athletics, gymnastics and dance.
All pupils access at least two hours of high-quality PE each week, alongside opportunities for daily physical activity. In addition, we provide a wide range of extra-curricular clubs, including football, athletics, netball, tag rugby and dance, allowing pupils to further develop their skills and interests. Year 4 pupils also take part in weekly swimming lessons, ensuring they develop essential water safety and swimming skills.
Our Team Theresa’s ethos is embedded throughout our provision, promoting teamwork, resilience, respect and a sense of belonging. Pupils are given regular opportunities to take part in competitive sport, both within school and at local and city-wide events, helping to develop confidence and a positive attitude towards participation and achievement.
Impact
By the time pupils leave St Theresa’s, they will have developed the skills, confidence and motivation to lead active and healthy lifestyles. They will demonstrate competence across a range of physical activities and understand the importance of physical activity for both physical and mental wellbeing.
Pupils will embody the Team Theresa’s values, showing teamwork, determination and resilience in both competitive and non-competitive environments. They will take pride in their participation and achievements, contributing to the school’s strong sporting reputation and success at local and wider levels.
Through their experiences in PE and sport, pupils will leave as confident, respectful and motivated individuals, well prepared to continue their sporting journey and maintain a positive relationship with physical activity in the future.
