Design Technology

Welcome to our DT page!  Mrs Acharya is our DT subject leader in school.

Intent

At St Theresa’s, our DT curriculum is designed in line with the aims of the National Curriculum, inspiring creativity, innovation and practical problem-solving. We aim to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to design, make and evaluate purposeful products, preparing them for life in an ever-changing modern world.

Our curriculum encourages children to think creatively and critically, while developing an understanding of how products are designed and used in real-life contexts. We make meaningful links to potential careers in design, engineering, manufacturing and technology, helping pupils to see the relevance of their learning. Through this, we aim to develop confident, resilient learners who can apply their skills to solve problems and meet
real-world needs.

Implementation

Our DT curriculum is delivered through carefully planned and sequenced units that build knowledge and skills progressively across each year group. Each unit follows the design, make and evaluate process, allowing pupils to develop practical skills alongside their understanding of materials, structures and mechanisms.

Teaching includes opportunities for pupils to research, plan, create and test their ideas, while learning about nutrition and cooking as part of a healthy lifestyle. Lessons are practical and engaging, with clear modelling and the use of subject-specific vocabulary to support understanding.

We make links to real-world contexts and careers, helping pupils understand how Design and Technology is used in everyday life. Assessment is ongoing and informs teaching, ensuring that all pupils are supported and challenged to achieve well.

Impact

By the time pupils leave St Theresa’s, they will be confident and creative problem-solvers who can design and make products for a range of purposes. They will be able to evaluate their work, reflect on their ideas and make improvements, demonstrating resilience and independence.

Pupils will understand how DT links to the wider world, including its role in different industries and careers. They will have developed practical skills, creativity and an awareness of how design can meet the needs of users, preparing them for the next stage of their education and life beyond school.

Our Year 3 PPA children made soup for the staff in school to raise money for our Lenten charities.

We have been designing packaging for our soups. We even researched about superfoods and how they can help us.
